Pipe problem
A crew removes equipment from the site of a break in a pipe carrying effluent from the Northern Pulp Mill, which can be seen in the background. Trucks and equipment from Connors Diving Services were on site at this location, near Pictou Landing. One said the work they were doing was suspended until Monday. Sean Kelly – The News
ABERCROMBIE – A leak in the pipe that takes effluent from Northern Pulp to Boat Harbour has shut down the paper mill, temporarily throwing roughly 180 employees out of work.
Environment Department spokesman Bruce Nunn says the province was notified immediately after the leak was discovered on Monday. The leak is located just under the East River estuary on the way to Boat Harbour.
"Apparently there was a release of effluent into the environment," Nunn said. "The company reported it immediately and was told to shut down production. They were directed that the pipe must be repaired before the mill can re-open."
The plant’s union did not know how long repairs would take.
"It could be fixed in two weeks, it might be considerably longer than that," said Don MacKenzie, the northern Nova Scotia rep for the Communications, Energy & Paperworkers (CEP) union, in an interview Wednesday night.  (more)  04/12/08 9:00 AM
